EA Sports Cricket 2007 : My Impressions

By indyan on November 30, 2006

EA Sports Cricket 2007 LogoEa Sports Cricket 07 is the latest avatar of the long running cricket game series. In the past Ea Sports has received a lot of flak for the poor quality of gameplay in their cricket games. Cricket 2005 was a complete disaster as far as gameplay was concerned. So, what most people were asking for is better gameplay. Like always EA made a bagfull of promises before release. So, did they deliver? Before answering that question I shall highlight the major changes/additions in this edition.

Whats New?

i) The first major new feature is Century Stick. Unfortunately I don’t have an analogue gamepad. So I wasn’t able to test it myself. According to Ea Sports those of you having an analogue controller will be able to play different shots by just pushing the stick in the desired direction. The power of strokes will depend on the amount of pressure you apply on the stick.

ii) Ea Sports have lost the licensing rights from ICC. Hence there is no Worldcup (however there is world championship) or Champions Trophy. They have retained the rights for England, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Players from other countries have goofed up names, and they have no face resemblance.

iii) Another major new addition is the Ashes series. You can take part in the Ashes 06-07 Downunder or relive the 05 Ashes in England. You can also relive several situations from the previous Ashes series. These mini challenges put you in a given scenario with a given set of objectives eg. scoring a half century with Pietersen or getting a hundred run opening partnership. You are introduced to each scenario using real clippings. Once you complete the challenge you unlock the same video in the Theatre. (It would have made more sense if the videos unlocked were different.)

iv) Twenty20 Cricket has also been introduced. You can play Twenty20 Championship with either Australian or English domestic teams. Although in Twenty20 format 2 runs were awarded for a no ball, free hit was not awarded.

Here is a full list of various Tournaments you can play

International : World Championship ( i.e Worldcup) in West Indies,
World Series in Australia, Knockout Cup in region of your choice, Test series, ODI series
Australian Domestic Cricket : Pura Cup, State Season, One Day Domestic Series, KFC Twenty20 Big Bash
English Domestic Cricket : County Season, Liverpool Victoria County Championship, Natwest Pro40, C&G Trophy, Twenty20 Cup.

v) One of the longstanding complaints of gamers has been that the pace of the game is too slow. Ea has finally listened. Now you can change the game speed (slow, medium and fast). This time around there are 5 difficulty levels instead of 3. You can also choose the number of overs of field restriction for 50 over games. There is no Powerplay though.

vi) Semi automatic fielding system similar to BLIC.

vii) And finally, there is no Jim Maxwell this time around! He has been replaced by Mark Nicholas.

Those were the major new features/changes. Now, let me do a bit of nitpicking

Tiny Utilities : Small is Good – I

By indyan on October 26, 2006

This is first part of a series of articles I intend to write about those small, free yet incredibly usefull softwares. I will start of with three of my favourites.

1. Unlocker : This is truely a must have software. I am sure that everyone has had the misfortune of encountering error messages like “Error Deleting File or Folder : It is being used by another person or program” while trying to modify/delete a file. The can be extremely frustrating, especially if you can’t recognize the process that is causing this trouble. This is where Unlocker comes into the picture. Unlocker is a tiny shell extension that integrates itself with the context menu.Unlocker can identify the process which is locking the file and unlock it, and most of the time you wont even need to kill/end the trouble causing process. Click on the image to view it in full size.

Sample error

Unlocker
Recent versions also include Unlocker assistant. Unlocker assistant stays in the system tray, and when you encounter some locked file it automatically Unlocks it.
Apart from unlocking a file, it can also directly delete, rename or move the file.

2. TrIDNet :
TrIDNet is an utility designed to identify file types from their binary signatures. It comes in handy as sometimes while downloading the extension of the file is lost (eg. while downloading email attachments or youtube videos using keepvid.com). I tested it with 10 different file formats : doc, pdf, txt, srt, flv, adr, avi, mp4, tiff, exe. It managed to succesfully detect all of them. Check the forums if you want to integrate TrIDNet with the context menu. This software can come in handy if you want to quickly and easily hide/disguise files without using any expensive software. All you need to do is to change the extension of the file you want to hide to something else (dont use a common format). When you neeed to access the file use Trid to get the original format.

3. Belarc Advisor :
Belarc Advisor is a free system inventory creator. There are scores of similar programs. However, the reason I prefer
is it creates an inventory of not only your hardware but also software. Its hardware monitor itself is reasonably detailed.
However, according to me the most usefull functionality provided by the software is related to Microsoft Security Hotfixes. It list’s all installed hotfixes as well as the hotfixes I am missing. It also creates a list of all the software installed. For the softwares I have purchased it lists the serial number/license key. It also displays your CIS (Center for Internet Security) benchmark score ( Screenshot ).

Belarc Advisor
Belarc Advisor

Edited to Add (24rth May) : Please be careful about what you do with the report that is generated by Belarc Advisor. If you decide to upload the report on the web don’t forget to delete the license keys included in it. More information is available here.

That’s all for now. Hopefully you will find these applications usefull.

Review : FrontMotion Login

By indyan on September 26, 2006

FrontMotion Login is a software that replaces your dry and boring default Windows Login window with a more interactive and cool looking one. What makes it stand out from other such software is the fact that it makes use of Macromedia Flash. Thus the login windows are animated and interactive.
FMLogin provides 6 English and 1 Chinese theme out of the box. Click on the thumbnails below for a preview.

Luna Green

FMLogin - Luna Green

Bubble OS Blue

FMLogin - Bubble OS
While using FMLogin I didn’t notice any large slowdowns as far as startup and shutdown is concerned. However, this depends largely on the theme. Heavy themes can cause some slowdowns.By default, FMLogin replaces the associates itself with the shortcut Ctrl+Alt+Del, and presents a menu instead of opening the task manager directly. I found this annoying (unfortunately this is also the default behaviour in Windows Vista). However, it can be disabled very easily. It fully supports Startup/Shutdown, Standby, Hibernate, Logon/Logoff and Fast User Switching. It also retains the support for inserting Legal Notice Caption and Legal Notice promt, which are little known features in Windows buried deep in the registry.
A part from replacing logons another useful function that FMLogin provides is the ability to lock the screen while you are away from your pc.
Lock your desktop with FMLogin
FMLogin is a really nifty software, however its greatest strength is also its greatest weakness. While the use of Flash makes it possible to add great effects, it also makes creating new themes more difficult. In fact there are just a handful of skins available. To make matters worse there is no central repository for storing skins so often users make skins, upload them at free uploading services which gets deleted and lost with time.Overall, this is one impressive software.

My Rating : 7/10
Price : Free for personal use

Opera Bytes

By indyan on September 19, 2006

After a pretty long lay-off I am back to blogging again. Hopefully, I will manage to (read: I will not be lazy) to update my blog more often. Anyway, let me first start off with some news about Opera.

i ) Opera v9.02 RC2 released : Opera v9.02 RC2 was released a few hours ago. Do check it out. Among other things live.com now works better in the RC builds.
For Windows, Mac, Unix .

ii) Opera attempts to patch Yahoo mail beta : Last year I had blogged about the new Yahoo Mail beta not supporting Opera ( link ). Opera dev Hallvord had then left a comment stating Opera soft will be working on it. He has kept his promise. Today or so (in Hallvord’s words) OddPatch 0.1 Beta will be launched. It will attempt to fix the flaws in Yahoo mail’s scripting through Opera’s browser.js . He writes in his blog :

It’s a complex patch sorting out a daunting number of issues on both sides. When things get this complex, it’s rarely only “their fault” or “our fault” – the testing has uncovered several bugs in Opera and several mistakes in their JavaScript

iii) Trond Werner Hansen leaves Opera : Trond who was involved with design and UI development related activities for Windows version of the browser, since 1999 left the company last week to pursue interests in music. He wrote a farewell message here .

iv) Opera’s CTO Hakon Wium Lie gets interviewed by Zdnet : A must read for any Opera fan. As usual, Mr. Lie didnt mince his words as far as Microsoft and Internet Explorer is concerned.

Excerpt from the Interview :

Any web designers will tell how much pain and grief IE5 and 6 have given them – and I think it’s been a tremendous cost to society, all these intelligent people working on web design having to debug their IE7 quirk mode late at night in order to make it look reasonable in a second rate browser.

Part 1 | Part 2

v) Nintendo showcases Opera for Wii : Nintendo has released a bunch of videos showing Opera for Wii in action.

Searching Google
Zooming and playing Multimedia in Opera
Browsing Google Maps
Source

vi) Opera.com is redesigned : Opera has decided to simplify their home page ( Screenshot of old page and new page ). All details about Opera for Mobile and other devices have been moved to separate pages, which is a good thing in my opinion.

Thats all for now 🙂

Indian ISPs block Blogspot

By indyan on July 18, 2006

The Indian Blogosphere is abuzz with speculation about the blocking of all blogs hosted on Blogspot. It first came to my notice when one of friend asked me if I could view his blog (hosted on blogspot). I could, but apparently his ISP was blocking it. On doing some research I found that ISP’s like Reliance Infocom, MTNL, and Tata Internet Services were blocking blogspot blogs. Over the last couple of days more and more ISP’s have implemented the ban on blogspot. Now my ISP Dataone has also blocked blogs hosted on Blogspot (however the main site is accesible). As far as I know, there hasn’t been any public explanation given by the government, however since this comes on the wake of Mumbai blasts, many people feel that they are interconnected. It may be possible that terrorist are using innocuous looking blogposts for communication; however, mass banning blogspot certainly wont solve the problem. After all, there are several blog-hosting services like wordpress.com, livejournal, rediff. Its also very easy to anonymously set up blogs using free hosting services. And why only blogs ? Social Networking sites and forums will probably be more convenient for terrorists. So this kind of a mass ban on blogspot serves no purpose, if indeed this has been done to thwart terrorists. However, it’s probably better to wait for an explanation from the government before blaming them. I remember that in 2003, the government had asked internet service providers to block certain unlawful yahoo groups, but the idiotic ISPs ended up blocking yahoo groups in it’s entirety! Its highly probable that a similar incident has happened in this case also. After all, the Indian ISPs aren’t the smartest around.

Wake up India

By indyan on July 13, 2006

11 minutes, 7 blasts. 190 dead , several hundred more injured.

Mumbai Bomb BlastAs Mumbaikars try their best to move ahead, and put this cowardly act of terrorism behind them, the question that is in every Indian’s mind is “What’s next ?“. The question is not whether another attack will take place but how soon it will take place.
To understand the gravity of the situation, first lets have a look at the major terrorist attacks since 2001[ Source : Wikipedia ].

2001 , October 1 : Terrorist target the Jammu and Kashmir state assembly. 35 people lost their live.
2001, December 13 : Terrorist attack on Indian Parliament. No casualty due to alert security forces.
2002, May 13 : 12 people are killed in the Jaunpur train crash in India, caused when Islamic extremists cut the rails.
2002, September 25 : Terrorist attack the Akshardham temple in Ahmedabad. 30 people died in the incident.
2002, December 21 : 20 people are killed in Kurnool when Islamic Extremists derailed a train.
2003, August 25 : 50 people are killed due to 2 bomb blasts in Mumbai.
2005, June 5 : Terrorists belonging to Lashkar-e-Toiba attacked the Ayodhya Ram Janmbhomi complex in India. No casualties. All the terrorists were gunned down.
2005, October 29 : Multiple bomb blasts hit markets in Delhi, India, killing at least 61 people.
2005, December 28 : Terrorists open fire at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, killing a retired professor of mathematics.
2006, Match 7 : Bombings in the city of Varanasi leave at least 15 people dead.
2006, July 11 : Explosions in local trains in Mumbai.

This list doesn’t include the terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. There are terrorist attacks there almost every alternate week. On the morning of 7/11 itself 8 tourists were killed in 5 grenade attacks.

The length of this list proves the sheer magnitude of threat India is currently facing from terrorists. Lashkar-e-Toiba’s clout is increasing alarmingly. According to preliminary investigation reports this attack may have been carried out by Lashkar-e-Toiba with the help of SIMI ( Students Islamic Movement of India ). Lashkar is now teaming with local and smaller terrorist organizations in several parts of India to carry out their action. This is a very worrying trend, as it increases their effectiveness by manifolds. However, the involvement of Pakistan in this is almost certain.
Yet, the most shocking thing is the reaction of the Government of India. In fact they have hardly reacted. All they do is to release a statement denouncing the act of terror and stating that we will stand united against Terrorists. Then as the days pass everyone forgets about it, till another attack takes place.
The only way of dealing with this crisis is by hitting back. By striking at the source of the problem. Doesn’t matter how much we strengthen our intelligence service, these kind of attacks will continue happening. The terrorists are bound to succeed at least one out of every 10 times. India is a vast and densely populated country with a lot of soft spots which can be easily targeted. To make matters worse it is surrounded by countries like Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh where ISI as well as Terrorist groups have considerable influence. The security agencies has managed to thwart several attacks in the past. In May, this year 43kg of RDX along with large number of Grenades and AK-47 was seized in Maharashtra. However, it will fail , and when it fails the concequences will be disastrous.
It is no secret that terrorist groups like Lashkar-e-Toiba, Harakat ul-Mujahidin, Hizbul Mujahideen, Jaish-e-Mohammed, are based in Pakistan and is supported in various ways by the Government of Pakistan. In spite of several requests from India the Government of Pakistan has refused to take any solid action against these groups. India has been assaulted repeatedly, and every time it chose to ignore it and extend a hand of friendship to Pakistan only to be rewarded by another vicious attack. In this perspective let me quote what Pakistan’s foreign minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri’ said after the blasts :

“Anything can go wrong anywhere in India or Pakistan. There are bomb blasts in India, there are bomb blasts in Pakistan. If you have these disputes, it enables negative forces in both countries to blame the other country and exploit the sentiment…I think we should try and take advantage of this improved atmosphere and resolve outstanding disputes, particularly the core issue of Jammu and Kashmir.”

Its worth nothing how he brought in the dispute over Kashmir while giving his reaction.

On July 12, the terrorist organization, Hezbollah launched an attack on Israel. Israel wasted absolutely no time in taking action on them, and opened fire on Lebanon, where Hezbollah is based. When the World Trade Center was attacked 2,749 people died. America fought back by waging a war against terrorism. India has lost thousands of more people due to persistent terrorism. And we will continue to loose thousands of more citizens, till our Government stands up and takes aggressive action.

WAKE UP INDIA. WAKE UP.

Opera v9 : Excellent but not Perfect

By indyan on June 21, 2006

Your Web, Your Choice: Opera 9 Gives You the ControlThe much awaited Opera v 9.0 is here. Currently, Opera’s desktop market share is very small, compared to Internet Explorer, Firefox or even Safari. With v9 Opera hopes to turn things around. With the release of v8.50 on September 20th, 2005 Opera got rid of the tag “Ad-Supported Freeware”. Since then it has been downloaded by millions of users, yet there has been no significant increase in the market share. According to Daniel Goldman Opera is gearing up for a serious marketing campaign. Hopefully, it will make some headway.

Opera has always been an innovator. Each of it’s previous builds were ahead of it’s time, and had something to offer that none of it’s competitors had. You can have a look at the comprehensive list of Opera’s Innovations over here . Version 9 also maintains that tradition. Lets have a look at the major new features that has been introduced in this version.
i ) Torrent Support : Many novice users find the concept of torrents confusing. Terms like torrent client, tracker, seeders only baffle them more. Opera has tried to simplify torrents for them through it’s torrent dowloader. It makes downloading torrents as simple as downloading a .exe file. However, it is not intended to replace a full fledged torrent client. So advanced users will probably give this feature a miss.
ii ) Site Specific Preferences : This is my favorite new feature. It allows you to set a specific set of rules for a given website. You can choose to allow pop-ups/block all pop-ups from a site, you can change the way cookies are handled, the useragent that opera uses and a host of other options including applying custom stylesheets. You can now disable javascript at certain malicious sites. Overall, this is incredibly useful
iii) Widgets : This is another feature that has grabbed a lot of attention. These are similar in functionality to the Konfabulator ( now Yahoo Widgets Engine ) or the Dashboard widgets in Mac. They act like tiny web applications. They use HTML, AJAX, JavaScript and CSS, and can use other technologies such as SVG. However, their functionality is limited, and are not Opera’s answer to Firefox’s extensions. There are some very usefull widgets available in the official widget gallery.
iv) Content Blocker : In it’s simplest form it is just an image blocker (ad/vulgarity blocker). Opera provides a very simple interface to block unwanted content. However, it fails to work on embedded flash content, which is very disappointing. Content blocker can be used to block any type of content, but you will need to find out it’s url from the source viewer.
v ) Search engine editor : This is another feature that was due for a long time. Now, adding new search engines to the search tab is a matter of few clicks. All you have to do is to right click in the search box and select “Create Search” option (don’t forget to add a keyword ). A simple yet functional UI is provided for managing the search.ini file.
vi) opera:config : In an attempt to simplify the user interface for a new users, Opera has removed all not so frequently used options from it’s preferences. Instead it has put them in he opera:config ( you need to type that in the address bar to access them ). This feature is obviously inspired by Firefox, but Opera’s one looks prettier.
vii) Thumbnail Preview of Tabs : If you hover your mouse pointer over the tabs, a thumbnail preview of that page will pop-up. This is a nice feature, but hasn’t been executed very well. The thumbnails are rather small and the preview pop-up is cluttered by unnecessary information like Encoding and MIME Type.
Opera has added another small feature to it’s tabs. You can now lock tabs, so that you don’t accidentally close them.
viii) Source Viewer : Opera has added an internal source viewer which highlights known syntaxes. One very weird thing is that if you switch to the Source viewer, Edit–>Find option becomes unavailable. You have to use Ctrl+F to bring up the Search Box.

Review : WindowFX 3

By indyan on June 14, 2006

WindowFX WindowFX is a unique desktop customization software. The previous version of WindowFX was released more than two and a half years ago. In spite of it’s uniqueness it’s previous versions had failed to become popular, and for a couple of years no one heard anything more about WindowFx from Stardock.
So what is different this time ? Will WindowFX succeed ?

First let us analyse the possible reasons of failure of WindowsFX v2. Allthough WindowFX makes your desktop look super cool, it comes at a price. WIndowFX does require some processing power. Back in 2002, most people didn’t have more than 128-256MB ram ,PIII were still very much in use and most people were without a graphics card. Hence, most users simply couldn’t afford to have Windows FX running on their system. However in the past few years RAM has become dirt cheap and processors have become more powerful. Entry level Graphics cards are available for a few thousand rupees. Hence, excluding the hardcore gamers most people can now afford to have programs like WindowsFX on their system.
Let us have a look at some of the features which will be present in WindowsFX v3.
? Window Transitions : WindowFX began as a software that added nifty transition effects for various functions in WIndows. This is still it’s main function. Windows transition effects occur when you minimize and restore windows.WindowsFx v3 provides 17 transition effects out of the box. You can set the length of the transition effects to suite your taste.
? Menu Animation : Just as the name suggest, this will add transition effects to menus. It worked flawlessly with all the applications I tried it on. 21 menu transition effects are provided out of the box. Again you can configure the length of the animation.
? First Appear Animation : These animations are shown when a new window is opened or closed. Advanced options allows you to disable this animation effect for windows smaller than a defined size. There are 21 animations provided out of the box.
? Shadows : Windows Xp already has shadow effect but compared to other visually appealing operating systems like OS X, it is pretty average. WindowFx provides 11 different shadow effects, including one which is similar to the shadow effect in mac. The shadows are alpha blended and looks crisp. One feature that I would like to see in the future versions is the ability to increase/decrease shadow size. Currently you can only change colour.
? Taskbar Preview : This is something that will be included in Windows Vista ( Screenshot taken from Paul Thurrott’s Review ). WindowFX shows a thumbnail preview of the window when you hover your cursor over the taskbar entry ( Screenshot ). It also works if the program has it’s icon in the system tray ( eg. Yahoo messenger and Winamp ). However, the main aim of WindowFX is to make your desktop look cool. But the thumbnail preview that pops up looks rather ugly. I prefer the way Visualtasktips works.
? Drag Animation : This comes into effect when you drag a window. Again you can choose any one of the 7 animations that WindowFX provides. I did not like most of the effects, and found them a bit annoying. The only one which I found to be somewhat decent is “Make the Window semi-transparent” while dragging option. This option also allows you to set the transparency level.
? Others : WindowFX also improves upon the Alt+Tab WindowSwitching feature in WIndows XP.Other features include adding transparency to windows taskbar as well as any application. Another interesting feature is “Minimize to size”. This would reduce the size of windows to a desired size instead of minimizing it when you click on the minimize button.Another option worth mentioning is the random transition effect.WindowFX can select a transition effect at random, thus surprising you every time.

The WAR over SPAM

By indyan on May 5, 2006

BluefrogA war has erupted between the spammers and a private company known as Bluesecurity. Bluesecurity develops a free software known as Bluefrog that aims to get rid of spammers by counter-attacking them. Conventional approach to tackling spam is to flag it and delete it. Bluefrog takes a more proactive approach. Once a message is marked as Spam the software will automatically post opt-out requests on the sites advertised by spam using contact information available on the site. Thus if someone sends a large number of spams about a pirticular product that website will be flooded with opt-out request. Thus Bluefrog spams the spammers! Some people consider this as immoral and illegal. Bluesecurity’s arguement is that, “Active Deterrence is an ethical solution to spam as it allows the members of the Blue Community to complain about spam in a safe and automated manner. The number of complaints posted by the Community is exactly equal to the number of spam messages received. Merchants and spammers are warned in advance and can easily avoid receiving complaints by complying with the Registry”. To me it is an apt way to teaching the spammers a lesson. Spammers can’t be convinced by sweet words and persuation. Blue Frog provides a way to fight back.
