Instant Desktop Search applications are a new breed of desktop search applications which are capable of indexing your hard disk almost instantly. Gone are the days of waiting hours for your desktop search application to finish indexing. These software leverage the metadata of your file system to index GBs of data in just a few seconds. Last year I reviewed Everything Search and neoSearch. While Everything Search offered more functionality, neoSearch was a hell of a lot lighter on system resources.
InSight Desktop Search belongs to the same category. It took less than 90 seconds to index 30GB of data (21,000 files). InSight Desktop Search offers an easily accessible search bar on the desktop through which all the functionalities of the tool is available.

If you are a frequent visitor to the darker side of the web I am sure you would have come across various link-protectors like LinkBucks, UserCash, URLCash, Linx.in, Rapidbolt.com and Link-protector.com. These services obfuscate the original download link and instead force you to click through multiple intervening pages (and a barrage of intrusive advertisements). They are pointless and annoying to say the least.

For any webmasters out there who are interested in giving their site some added protection, look into getting a website security audit. Remember, online security works both ways.

The recent publication of confidential twitter documents by TechCrunch has been drawing a lot of attention. These documents were leaked by a hacker who managed to break into personal accounts of multiple Twitter employees including Evan Williams (CEO, Twitter).
Earlier this week TechCrunch explored the inherent security flaws in the current ecosystem and analysed how the hacker exploited them. Most of the hackers aren’t super nerds who posses out of the world programming skills. Instead they are simply curious and patient human beings who use tools available to all of us (like Google Search) to systematically discover and exploit weaknesses present in the security chain.
Hacker Croll (as the twitter hacker likes to call himself) wouldn’t have been able to penetrate twitter without the callousness of Twitter employees. Unfortunately, most of us are extremely casual about online security and don’t follow even the most basic security practices Here are five essential security tips that will help you avert potential disasters:

Opera is packed with dozens of cool little features which even regular users may not be aware of. User Stylesheets (UserCSS) is one such feature. When combined with Site Preferences, it permits styling specific webpages and allows developers to design skins even for websites that may not support them.
Stylish extension allows Firefox users to enjoy the benefits of UserCSS. In fact Stylish took things a step further by addind an easy to use GUI and supporting skinning of various aspects of the browser itself using UserCSS.

Most of us pay little attention to the hard disk till it starts acting up. Unfortunately, by then it may be too late. A hard disk failure is a disastrous even and is a computing nightmare that no one wants to experience. However, a hard disk crash generally doesn’t happen out of the blue. Often there are signs which just gets ignored.
All modern day hard disks come with S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology). According to Wikipedia 60% of hard disk crashes occur due to mechanical failures which is a gradual procedure. S.M.A.R.T. continuously logs hard disk performance and is the best way to gauge the drive’s health and predict failure.

The second beta of Opera v10 is out. Although you can download the build from Opera’s ftp servers the release hasn’t been officially announced. Opera will possibly announce it within new few hours.
Beta 2 should be a future complete version of Opera 10. We will have to wait for the changelog to learn exactly what has changed. However, the most visible change are the modified icons and tab bar colour scheme (which integrates better with the skin). The browser pages (Error Page, About Page, Config Page etc) has also been changed. The new error pages are definitely prettier. Surprisingly Opera Unite has been removed from this build (indicating it is not yet ready for primetime). So, if you are using Operaa Unite stick to the Weekly Builds (Snapshot).
Opera is approaching its final release and the focus will now shift from new features to bug fixes and stability. Expect the final build soon.

A surprisingly large number of users still use Twitter’s web interface for tweeting. A good majority of them are basic users who possibly don’t need advanced features offered by the desktop clients. However, there are times when even power users are forced to use the web-client. For example, when tweeting from office or cyber cafe. Here are two new web-based alternatives to Twitter.com which were released earlier this week. They offer features comparable to desktop clients right inside your browser.
Seesmic Web
Seesmic is a relatively new twitter client that is already making waves. Seesmic Desktop client is my favourite due to features like Spell Check, Tweet Shrink and full Facebook Integration (TweetDeck has a half-hearted Facebook integration).
Like its desktop counterpart Seesmic Web offers Multi-Column as well as single column interface. The single column interface is aimed at the casual twitter users who may not be comfortable with multi-column interface. At first glance the single column mode looks strikingly similar to Gmail. And this actually works to its benefit. The single column interface appears simplistic, easy to use and familiar as it should. The multi-column interface looks a lot like its desktop counterpart. By default two columns are available – Your Twitter Feed and the Replies Feed. Any Twitter search you perform gets saved to your twitter account history and the results are displayed in a column (in multi-column mode). Another helpful feature is the threaded direct message display. If you use DM a lot, this will certainly help you. Seesmic automatically groups conversations together in Gmail style.

Modern day games are resource hungry giants which require every ounce of your computer’s resources. However, the fact is that most of the casual gamers have systems which are just not optimised for gaming. Windows itself comes with a bunch of additional services which are not essential for the functioning of the system, but are present to provide additional functionalities. On top of that users have other services such as antivirus software, unnecessary driver agents etc running in the background. These processes use up a fair amount of system memory as well as some computing power.
Game Booster is a freeware from IOBits which attempts to boost your games performance by maximising the amount of system resource available to games. Game Booster allows you to optimise your system for gaming with the click of a button. When you enable gaming mode it disables all unnecessary services and processes and cleans your RAM. It also gives the user the option to close user applications running in the background.
