The 140 character limit is what defines Twitter. It is widely considered to be one of the reasons behind the popularity of twitter. However, people are always looking for more and 140 characters may not always be sufficient. Although you can’t actually send more than 140 characters there are a few tricks using which you can pack more content into your tweets.
Shrink Your Tweet: One of the simplest techniques is to use abbreviations and SMS-speak. Yesterday I reviewed Notebook Hardware Control which helps laptop users to make the best use of their system. Among other things NHC is capable of monitoring battery life and even extending it by automatically changing your LCD brightness and switching Power Plans. Today I shall take a look at another freeware called BatteryCare which is also aimed at increasing battery backup duration.
The main features of BatteryCare are:
Complete battery information : BatteryCare is capable of displaying pretty much every information you should know about your battery including manufacturer name, designed capacity, current capacity, wear level and voltage.

Save Power : BatteryCare can automatically disable Windows Aero and other unneccesary services (SuperFetch, ReadyBoost and SearchIndexer) when your laptop is running on battery. Just disabling Windows Aero can increase your backup time significantly.

Opera 10 final release is fast approaching. Today Opera released what should be the final beta build of Opera (to be followed by a RC or even final build). The focus during this build was on performance and stability. Although there aren’t any major new features there are plenty of minor changes.
John Hicks has been working really hard. The theme has been tweaked and numerous UI inconsistency issues has been fixed. Also present in beta 3 is a new attention state design where a dot tells you if a page requires your attention (hasn’t been viewed yet). And last but not least; visual support for tabs is not enabled even if you like to have your Tab Bar on the side (vertically).

There are plenty of hardware monitoring and tweaking tools out there. However, almost none of them are developed keeping in mind the needs of a Laptop user. Notebooks require special attention and different treatment from Desktops. While performance is all that matters to a desktop user, laptop users have to keep in mind issues like battery life.
Notebook Hardware Control (NHC) is an advanced utility which is made just for laptop users. The main features offered by NHC are :
Monitor CPU Status : NHC is a competent monitoring tool which is capable of monitoring CPU Temperature as well as Hard Disk temperature along with CPU Load, CPU Voltage, Virtual Memory, RAM Status and Battery Charge. It displays CPU Temperature as Distance from TJMax which is always a better metric than absolute temperature (which is nothing but a guess).

Long time back, I had written about a tiny utility called TrIDNet which could analyse any file (with missing or incorrect extension) and identify its correct extension. But what if you already know the correct file type but just can’t figure out how to open the file? You could always try your luck with Microsoft Application Search, but that doesn’t always find what you were looking for. For example Microsoft Application Search failed to identify a C# source code.

Making Windows XP look like Windows Seven just got easier with TrueTransparency. Yesterday I told you about ViGlance which allowed Windows XP users to enjoy Windows Seven like iconised taskbar. TrueTransparency is another free utility which will help you get the Windows 7 effect without paying for a new operating system.

TrueTransperency replaces standard Windows XP borders and title bars with transparent images like in Vista and Seven. It comes built in with three variations of Aero and one custom CrystalXP.com theme. TrueTransperency doesn’t stop by just emulating the Aero appearence (glass effect). It goes a further and even adds Windows Seven only features like Aero Shake and Aero Snap.

Windows Seven is almost here. The RTM buid is done and was made available to a wider audience yesterday. However, if you are on a older machine and can’t upgrade to Windows 7 (or your simply prefer XP over Windows 7) don’t worry. You can still enjoy many of the features offered by Windows Seven even in Windows XP. Over the next few days I will be reviewing applications that will help you enhancing your XP experience.
The most visible change in Windows 7 is its taskbar (sometimes called the Superbar). With ViGlance you can have an iconised taskbar even in Windows XP. Some of the main features of ViGlance are –
Iconised Taskbar : ViGlance allows Windows XP users to enjoy Windows 7 like iconised taskbar (with 48px icons).

I discovered Ginipic a couple of days ago via TechCrunch. And boy am I impressed! If you are not interested in image search then ignore this post. However, if you have a lot of images on your computer and/or require new images a lot, then GiniPic is for you.
GiniPic makes a solid first impression with its elegent and well thought of layout. You can either use GiniPic as a normal applicatin or Dock it to your screen. The later allows you to use GiniPic alongside other applications. GiniPic supports multiple sources including your own local collection (Ginipic allows only one folder as Local Source, however it can scan through sub folders). GiniPic supports all popular web galleries and search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, Flickr, Smugmug, DeviantArt, Photobucker, Picassa and so on. In depth options are available for each search engine.

You have probably heard about Andriod if you are even remotely interested in smart phones. Andriod is a Linux based operating system intended for mobile phones. It started off as a Google project (and is still generally considered as Google’s product by many), but is currently developed by the Open Handset Alliance.
Although Andriod has garnered a lot of acclaim, till date very few Andriod phones have been manufactured (with the most notable ones being from HTC). Things are changing and a slew of Andriod phones are expected later this year or early next year from various manufacturers including Sony Ericsson. Thankfully you don’t need to buy a new handset if you want to check out Andriod. LiveAndroid is a community driven project which offers Live CD (as well as Live USB) of Andriod OS which works on PCs.

Smooth Scrolling is a technique which reduces the sudden jumps in display while scrolling. The content will appear to seamlessly flow in and out of the screen as you scroll. Smooth Scrolling reduces strain on your eye and prevents you from getting disoriented. It’s one of those things every browser should ship with. In this article I will go mention briefly how you can enable smooth scrolling in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera
Smooth Scrolling in Internet Explorer
Open Internet Options via Control Panel or Internet Explorer Tools Menu. Select the Advanced tab. Locate the “Use Smooth Scrolling” option (present inside the Browsing section). Make sure that this option is checked.
