By indyan on August 15, 2009

Yesterday I reviewed Notebook Hardware Control which helps laptop users to make the best use of their system. Among other things NHC is capable of monitoring battery life and even extending it by automatically changing your LCD brightness and switching Power Plans. Today I shall take a look at another freeware called BatteryCare which is also aimed at increasing battery backup duration.

The main features of BatteryCare are:

Arrow Complete battery information : BatteryCare is capable of displaying pretty much every information you should know about your battery including manufacturer name, designed capacity, current capacity, wear level and voltage.

BatteryCare : Battery Information

Arrow Save Power : BatteryCare can automatically disable Windows Aero and other unneccesary services (SuperFetch, ReadyBoost and SearchIndexer) when your laptop is running on battery. Just disabling Windows Aero can increase your backup time significantly.

Opera 10 Beta 3 Released

By indyan on August 14, 2009

Opera Browser Opera 10 final release is fast approaching. Today Opera released what should be the final beta build of Opera (to be followed by a RC or even final build). The focus during this build was on performance and stability. Although there aren’t any major new features there are plenty of minor changes.

Arrow John Hicks has been working really hard. The theme has been tweaked and numerous UI inconsistency issues has been fixed. Also present in beta 3 is a new attention state design where a dot tells you if a page requires your attention (hasn’t been viewed yet). And last but not least; visual support for tabs is not enabled even if you like to have your Tab Bar on the side (vertically).

Tweak and Monitor Your Laptop With Notebook Hardware Control

By indyan on August 14, 2009

There are plenty of hardware monitoring and tweaking tools out there. However, almost none of them are developed keeping in mind the needs of a Laptop user. Notebooks require special attention and different treatment from Desktops. While performance is all that matters to a desktop user, laptop users have to keep in mind issues like battery life.

Notebook Hardware Control (NHC) is an advanced utility which is made just for laptop users. The main features offered by NHC are :

Arrow Monitor CPU Status : NHC is a competent monitoring tool which is capable of monitoring CPU Temperature as well as Hard Disk temperature along with CPU Load, CPU Voltage, Virtual Memory, RAM Status and Battery Charge. It displays CPU Temperature as Distance from TJMax which is always a better metric than absolute temperature (which is nothing but a guess).

OpenWith.Org Tells You How To Open An Unknown File

By indyan on August 12, 2009

Long time back, I had written about a tiny utility called TrIDNet which could analyse any file (with missing or incorrect extension) and identify its correct extension. But what if you already know the correct file type but just can’t figure out how to open the file? You could always try your luck with Microsoft Application Search, but that doesn’t always find what you were looking for. For example Microsoft Application Search failed to identify a C# source code.

Get a Taste of Andriod with Live Andriod for PCs

By indyan on August 5, 2009

You have probably heard about Andriod if you are even remotely interested in smart phones. Andriod is a Linux based operating system intended for mobile phones. It started off as a Google project (and is still generally considered as Google’s product by many), but is currently developed by the Open Handset Alliance.

Although Andriod has garnered a lot of acclaim, till date very few Andriod phones have been manufactured (with the most notable ones being from HTC). Things are changing and a slew of Andriod phones are expected later this year or early next year from various manufacturers including Sony Ericsson. Thankfully you don’t need to buy a new handset if you want to check out Andriod. LiveAndroid is a community driven project which offers Live CD (as well as Live USB) of Andriod OS which works on PCs.

By indyan on August 4, 2009

Smooth Scrolling is a technique which reduces the sudden jumps in display while scrolling. The content will appear to seamlessly flow in and out of the screen as you scroll. Smooth Scrolling reduces strain on your eye and prevents you from getting disoriented. It’s one of those things every browser should ship with. In this article I will go mention briefly how you can enable smooth scrolling in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera

Arrow Smooth Scrolling in Internet Explorer
