By indyan on October 15, 2009

Good news for Indian twitter users. Twitter has struck a deal with Bharti Airtel (the largest mobile carrier in India) which would allow Indian users to receive free twitter updates on the go. Twitter has already started promoting this deal. If you are an Indian, be prepared to be greeted by the following notification on the home page.

Twitter SMS Updates for Airtel Users

If you are an Airtel subscriber, setting up your Twitter account is really simple. You can either do it from the Devices page or simply text START to 53000. Receiving SMS updates is completely free. However, standard text messaging rates (Re 1.00 per message in most cases) will apply for sending updates.

Thirty Three Things Every Blogger Should Do After Installing WordPress

Thirty Three Things You Should Do After Installing WordPress

After installing WordPress, most new users ask “What Next?”. Creating and maintaining a WordPress powered blog is simple. However, many new users are often confused by the sheer number of options available. On top of that there are thousands of plugins for further enhancing WordPress. Making the correct choices may appear to be a daunting task. Here are 33 tips to help you get started with WordPress.

Essential

Arrow 1. Configure WordPress

After installing WordPress go through all the settings and familiarise yourself with all the options. I will discuss critical aspects like Permalink Structure later on. But here are a few other important stuff you should not miss:

Circle RSS Feed Settings: You have the option to choose between offering full feeds and partial feeds. I strongly believe that everyone should offer full feeds, because excerpts as feeds simply defeat the purpose of RSS. You can find this setting under Reading Settings.

Circle Threaded Comments: Threaded comments actually increases user interaction by making it possible to directly reply to a post. Don’t forget to enable this option under Discussion Settings.

Circle Chose your default Gravatar: Recent builds of WordPress also integrate Gravatars by default. If a commenter doesn’t have a gravatar then a default display picture is used. You can specify this from Discussion Settings.

Arrow 2. Take Care of Your Database with WP-DBManager

Wp-DBManager is one of the few plugins that I truly consider as essential. It takes care of almost all database related tasks. Some if its main features are:

Google Integrates Google Hot Trends Into Search Results

By indyan on September 29, 2009

Make no mistake; Twitter poses a serious threat to Google. And Google knows it. They have already declared real time search as their biggest challenge. Real time search is all about picking up on ‘What’s Hot’ right now. Twitter does that very well and is a good indicator of what people are interested in at that moment. Unknown to many, Google has had a product similar to Twitter’s Trending Topics for more than a year. It’s called Hot Trends. It is basically a list of the hottest search queries in the United States during the past hour. The biggest problem with Hot Trends was that there was no easy way to access it directly from Google Search. Hence, most people weren’t even aware of its existence.

Earlier today Google decided to change all that and make Google Trends more accessible. Google Hot Trends is now directly integrated into search results. If you search for any term present in Google’s Hot Trends list you will be presented with a one box displaying more information on the trending topic. Interestingly enough Google has reduced the number of trends listed on Hot Trends to 40. However, the Google Trends onebox will be displayed for all queries present in the top 100.

Yahoo Meme – Review and Invites

By indyan on September 21, 2009

Yahoo Meme - Twitter Clone?

The last couple of years have been really tough for Yahoo. It’s not that they aren’t trying. But they simply don’t have much to show for their efforts. Yahoo has been attempting to make inroads into the social web, but the results have only been disastrous. Yahoo 360, Mash and SpotM all ended up being big duds and had to be shut down. One of the problems is that they always appear to be playing catch-up. Yahoo has been busy merely reacting to the latest trends instead of aggressively launching innovative products to catch public imagination. Yahoo Meme is another perfect example.

Opera Mini 5 has undergone a total remake. In fact at first glance it may appear to be a completely different browser. The drab red skin has made way for an intuitive and sleek polished black interface. YAPM is Not Just Another Process Manager

By indyan on September 14, 2009

Windows provides a Process Manager (called Task Manager) out of the box. Although it’s more than sufficient for most people, advanced users will find it to be a bit too basic. SysInternals Process Explorer is probably the most popular Task Manager alternative. However, it may have an worthy competitor in YAPM. YAPM as you may have guessed stands for Yet Another (remote) Process Monitor.

YAPM’s interface looks stunning and definitely makes a great first impression. The Ribbon interface ensures that in spite of being packed with features YAPM doesn’t look cluttered and confusing. And in case you are not comfortable with the Ribbon UI you also have the option of using the old school Menu based UI.

YAPM is one of the most advanced Process Manager’s available. Here are just a few of its features:
Arrow Support for remote monitoring of processes.
Arrow Ability to set process affinity in a multi-core system (i.e. specify the Core that will be favoured by a Process).
Arrow Ability to trim a process’s working set and release unused RAM.
Arrow Includes a Process Viewer which offers extremely detailed information about each process.

Schedule Your Internet Connection With Broadband Scheduler

By indyan on September 7, 2009

Although broadband penetration has improved in leaps and bounds over the past few years, truly unlimited broadband connections are still a rarity in India. Most unlimited connections have speed caps and fair usage policies associated with them. On top of that, most unlimited broadband plans are outrageously priced. The combination of aforementioned factors has led most people to opt for broadband plans with bandwidth limits but night limited mode (i.e. download and upload during the night is not charged).

The trouble with night unlimited plans is that the timings are rather odd. For example, India’s most popular ISP – Dataone’s night unlimited mode kicks in at 2:00 a.m. and ends at 8:00am. It’s simply not feasible for most people to stay up at such odd hours. This is where Broadband Scheduler comes in.
