Google and Microsoft Make Typing in Hindi, Bengali and Other Indian Languages Easier

By indyan on December 18, 2009

Google and Microsoft love breathing down each others neck. In another classic example of not wanting to fall behind the other, both of them have announced Language transliteration tools which would allow users to type in their native language using the normal English keyboard.

These transliteration tools use free-form transliteration, which means that the user can enter text in a natural manner (phonetically) using English script and it would be automatically transliterated to the target language. Microsoft calls its transliteration tool Indic Language Input Tool, while Google calls it simply Google Transliteration. For now Microsoft is focusing only on Indian languages and supports Bengali, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telegu. Google Transliteration is a lot more global in nature and supports Arabic, Bengali, Greek, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Sanskrit, Serbian, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. Let’s take an in-depth look at both of them.

How to Disable Annoying JavaScript Effects in Firefox and Opera

By indyan on November 16, 2009

JavaScripts were first introduced by Netscape in 1995. In the past decade and a half they have evolved into one of the most popular scripting languages and have become an integral part of the web. JavaScripts are fascinating and fantastic. But they can also be agonising and annoying. Used in the wrong way, they can go a long way towards running your surfing experience. For example, nothing annoys me more than a tab suddenly stealing focus. Fortunately for us, both Firefox and Opera include in-built mechanisms to block these nuisance causing scripts.

How Fix Windows 7 BSOD Due to 4GB RAM

By indyan on November 15, 2009

Windows-7-Crash-Due-To-4GB-RAM I ran into a peculiar problem recently. I had 1 x 2GB DDR2 RAM installed on my laptop. When I tried adding another ram stick (again 2GB), Windows 7 started crashing. I would get the infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) during the “Windows is Loading” screen.

Obviously, the most probable culprit was the RAM stick. And that’s what I thought too. But, soon I realised that Windows 7 was the only one having trouble with 4GB ram. Linux Mint worked perfectly with 4GB as well as 2GB ram and Memtest didn’t throw up any errors.

How to Enable Port Forwarding

By indyan on November 14, 2009

How-To Enable-Port-Forwarding

If you have ever used BitTorrent clients like uTorrent or BitComet you are probably aware of the term port forwarding. Most modern routers have UPnP (Universal Plug ‘n Play) or NAT-PMP built in, which allows automatic forwarding of ports. However, others need to forward a port manually. If you get the yellow icon in uTorrent or other torrent clients, then you need to forward your port (if it is red, then the probable culprit is your Firewall). But before discussing how to forward a port, let us first learn the meaning of port forwarding.

Three Really Cool Futuristic Tech Videos from Microsoft

Microsoft-Cool-Futuristic-Videos

In spite of the innumerable ground breaking products from Microsoft, it is not the first name which pops into our mind when someone talks about innovation. And Microsoft knows this. They have been desperately trying to change the perception that Microsoft is a ruthless and old-school monopoly. As a part of this effort, Microsoft (mainly Microsoft Office Labs) has produced some awesome concept videos and demos.

Use Your Keyboard LEDs as Network Activity Indicators

By indyan on November 13, 2009

Almost all keyboards have at least three LEDs, which indicate the current status of Caps Lock, Num Lock and Scroll. However, over the years I have never really found the LEDs to be useful. Network Lights is a portable utility for Windows, which allows you to utilise the keyboard LEDs for a different purpose.

Network Lights utilises the LEDs as network activity indicators. It allows you to monitor your network’s upload/download activity through the Scroll Lock and Num Lock LEDS. Each LED will flicker when network activity is detected.

How Effective Is Your Antivirus Software? [2009 Edition]

By indyan on November 8, 2009

Most-Effective-AntivirusDetection is undoubtedly an important factor, but it is not the sole criteria by which you should judge an antivirus. A good detection rate and strong self-protection features should ensure that an antivirus is able to keep any malware at bay. But, there may be occasions when you have already been infected by a malware (possibly due to your carelessness). In such cases the security product’s cleaning abilities become absolutely vital.
