When it comes to system security, prevention is always better than cure. If you have a decent antivirus, chances are that it will easily manage to stop a malware in its tracks. However, it is much harder to repair a system that has already been infected. In fact, we have already seen worms like Conficker go out of its way to prevent detection and disinfection.
If you are looking to repair an infected system, you should first try your luck with an efficient antivirus utility. VirusEffectRemover can also come in handy to remove the side-effects of a malware infection. Come back here only after everything else has failed.
In Norton’s own words
There are some threats that impersonate legitimate programs, modify browsers or the boot screen graphics, and even redirect traffic. Our standard scanners necessarily have a delicate balance between effective malware detection and removal and erroneously removing legitimate files. Sometimes, these “scareware” programs can require special tactics to remove them. With the Norton Power Eraser tool, these threats (and others) are specifically targeted, and thus are effectively detected and removed.
Power Eraser is a free tool, which is currently in the public beta testing phase. What sets it apart from other malware removers is its aggressiveness. I used Power Eraser on a clean system and it identified three potential risks – all of which are obviously false positives.
The good thing about Power Eraser is that it does not require installation. The downside is its rather aggressive EULA (end user license agreement). Make sure that you are comfortable with clauses such as the one highlighted below before using it.
Download Norton Power Eraser (5.14 MB)
Version Reviewed: 1.0.0.38
Cost: Free
Note: This tool is intended to be a measure of last resort. Use it only after everything else has failed. It will almost inevitably detect a few innocuous programs and files due to its aggressive nature.

YouTube’s recent redesign broke many of the popular YouTube video downloading utilities and web-apps. But, fear not, there is always a solution. My personal favourite is the ‘Download YouTube Videos as MP4‘ UserScript (or UserJs for Opera users).
This lightweight solution works on all major browsers; some like Firefox require a third party plugin, while others don’t. Scroll down to view installation instructions for Firefox, Opera and Chrome.

Facebook is no longer just about sharing snippets of your life. It is as much a content sharing platform as Twitter and Posterous. So, it’s not surprising that someone decided to put together a mashup to comb through all the noise and highlight the hottest topics of conversation on Facebook.
ItsTrending is a quick mashup created by Matt Schlicht, which provides a real time feed of the most shared content on Facebook. The site is divided into several sections. The featured content section displays top videos, addictive games and news. The other sections (News, Videos, Pictures and Games) have channels for major websites like TechCrunch, Digg, YouTube, Hulu and Flickr. Each channel showcases the most ‘Liked’ items from a particular website.
Another similar (but superior) service is Like Button. However, Like Button has a greater number of categories and several additional channels. Moreover, it provides you the flexibility to create new channels from your favourite websites.
Services like ItsTrending and Like Button can come in quite handy if you want a quick and easy way to discover hottest content from around the web. However, be warned – stay away from the Games section if the next couple of hours of your life is precious to you. I just lost half an hour playing ‘Eyjafjallajoekull‘.

Avira has avshadow.exe and Kaspersky has klwtblfs.exe. It is beyond me as to why security product vendors can’t come up with less dubious names and descriptions for their processes.
The klwtblfs.exe process is an integral part of Kaspersky Antivirus and Security Suite. It takes care of the web browser add-ons and provides functionalities such as link filtering (anti-phishing) and virtual keyboard. So yeah, Kaspersky did have a valid reason for entering WebToolBar component in the process’ description field. Unfortunately, over the years toolbars have been misused and maligned by malware distributors. So much so, that now even the mention of the word “toolbar” raises a flag.
Coming back to the topic, if you have Kaspersky Internet Security or Kaspersky Antivirus on your system then you don’t have to worry about klwtblfs.exe. If you still want to ascertain that it is indeed a genuine Kaspersky owned process, you can compare its MD5 Hash with the ones mentioned here.

This has to be one of the strangest headlines I have ever written, but EarWurm is a strange service. The sole purpose of this service is to put a worm in your ears – no not the literal kind but figurative one.
Have you ever had a song, jingle or melody stuck in your head? If yes, then you have been affected by an earwurm. An earwurm is any piece of music, which can have you humming for days consciously as well as unconsciously.

It’s a common myth that we don’t need defragmentation tools, since modern day computers are fast enough to overcome performance hits caused due to file fragmentation. I can confidently claim otherwise from my own personal experience. Nevertheless, if you need further proof, check out some of the shootouts performed by Donn Edwards – the defrag guy.
Raxco recently released the final version of PerfectDisk 11 – a premium defragmentation tool. Being a paid utility in a segment flooded with free alternatives isn’t easy. One must necessarily stay ahead of the competition to remain in the game. And, that’s exactly what PerfectDisk has managed to do. If you haven’t used PerfectDisk before, here is a quick look at some of it’s best features.

Unless you are a system administrator, port scanning is not something you will need to do every day. In fact, as long as you use a firewall, you need not worry about being exposed. However, if you ever find yourself needing a simple port scanner, Roadkil’s Scan Port should fit the bill.
There are plenty of sophisticated and advanced port scanners available for Windows; Scan Port is not even in the same league as them when it comes to features. However, this is a good thing. Scan Port’s biggest strength is its simplicity.
