Unless you are a system administrator, port scanning is not something you will need to do every day. In fact, as long as you use a firewall, you need not worry about being exposed. However, if you ever find yourself needing a simple port scanner, Roadkil’s Scan Port should fit the bill.
There are plenty of sophisticated and advanced port scanners available for Windows; Scan Port is not even in the same league as them when it comes to features. However, this is a good thing. Scan Port’s biggest strength is its simplicity.
The utility itself is a tiny-weeny download and doesn’t require installation. After launching it, just enter a target system and the range of ports you wish to scan and you are good to go. If you wish to scan your own system, use localhost as your target system. Scan Port will list all open, closed as well as ports that are being filtered by your firewall. It will also tell you the protocol or service associated with commonly used ports.
Scan Port is an excellent option if you just want to find out which ports in your system are open and which ones are closed. It can come in handy while assessing your system’s security or configuring torrent clients and is worth keeping in your toolkit.
