iPhone Skin For Winamp

By indyan on May 24, 2007

Thanks to elralfaro at deviantART.com you can make Winamp look like the yet to be released iPhone.

iPhone Skin for Winamp - Without Cd Cover iPhone Skin for Winamp - With Cd Cover

This is a gorgeous looking skin with built in cd-cover displayer. However, this skin does have a minor usability issue.

All the buttons in the Playlist has been removed in favour of a “Open” button in the main body. But, when you add files using the Open button, existing playlist is removed. Hence, the only way you can add media files from multiple folders (if they are not present in the Media Library) is by drag and drop. However, if you use Winamp’s Media Library this shouldn’t cause any headache.

You can download this skin from here.

By indyan on May 23, 2007

Launchy Launchy is a file launcher for Windows XP. The developers claim it would help you forget about your start menu, the icons on your desktop, and even your file manager.

Arrow How Does it Work?

To begin with Launchy indexes your start menu programs, control panel applications and Firefox bookmarks. When not needed Launchy hides in the background utilizing very little system resources. Upon pressing Alt+Space a tiny window pops up. You can type the name of the application or bookmark you want to launch and Launchy would provide suggestions as you type. All this is so easy that you have to simply use it to believe.

Youtube Launches Bollywood Channel

By indyan on May 22, 2007

Eros EntertainmentYouTube has struck a content sharing deal with Eros Entertainment that will enable it to offer content from Bollywood movies. The Eros Entertainment – Bollywood Channel will feature music videos, trailers and promotional videos. As of now 163 videos are available for viewing.

Content from several Bollywood movie is already available illegally on YouTube (many movies are available in their entirety). However, I believe that this is the first instance of YouTube tying up with an Indian media company. With the penetration of broadband increasing in India, companies are finally realising the benefits of leveraging the web. Rajshri Media already provides significant amount of video content on their portal for free.
I am sure this is only the beginning. The web offers an easy and cost efficient venue for promoting content. As broadband connection gets cheaper and faster, I expect Indian companiesto start taking advantage of the internet in a big way.

Judge in UK Asks What is a Website

By indyan on May 19, 2007

Justice Peter Openshaw, a judge in an internal terrorism trial in United Kingdom admitted in front of stunned prosecutors that he had no idea what a website was. His exact words were:

The trouble is I don’t understand the language. I don’t really understand what a website is.

He was later coached by a computer expert on the World Wide Web through a PowerPoint presentation. The question is can someone like Justice Peter Openshaw be expected to deliver an informed and intelligent judgement in a case of cyber-terrorism?

Latest Rumour : Google Wants FeedBurner

By indyan on May 18, 2007

FeedBurner Earlier today Microsoft added the advertising network aQuantive to it’s kitty. Now, another big deal is possibly in the making. Vecosys is reporting that Google is all set to purchase the extremely popular RSS Feed Delivery service FeedBurner.

Feedburner is one of the fastest growing startups, and is extremely popular among bloggers. It would provide Google instant access to a large number of publishers in a fresh territory. With the inclusion of RSS Feed readers in all major browsers more and more people are waking up to the advantages of RSS Feeds. RSS Feed monetisation is already profitable, and this is a market Google can not afford to miss out on. Not only that, if they decide to integrate Feed Stats into Google Analytics that would make add more value to an already popular service.

But, again as this stage it’s just a rumour. None of the involved parties have confirmed or denied this report.

Update (24rth May) : This is no longer a rumour. TechCrunch is reporting that the deal has been sealed for $100 million.

Opera Users Are Most Likely to be Running Old Versions

By indyan on May 18, 2007

Opera According to data collected by Secunia Software Inspector from over 350,000 inspections, Opera users are most likely to be running old versions of the software. According to this report 5.19% of all Firefox v2 installations miss security updates, whereas 11.96% of all Opera v9 installations miss security updates, and the numbers for Internet Explorer v6 and Internet Explorer v7 are 9.61% and 5.4% respectively.

I am not surprised that Firefox users are most updated because Firefox has an excellent auto-update system which automatically notifies its users when an update is available and downloads only the updated files. Opera also notifies it’s users when an update is available but it’s users have to download the full installation file manually from it’s website.

Yet Another Widget Developer Contest

By indyan on May 16, 2007

OperaOpera Software has announced yet another Widget Developer contest. Up for grabs are a Windows Mobile phone (that runs Opera), Nintendo DS Lite and Opera goodie bags. You can find more detail here. Few months back Opera gave away a Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS Lite in another Widget Developer contest. However, this time the contest has a definite theme – “Travellers”.

Widgets was one of the big new features in Opera v9. Since, its release Opera Soft has actively promoted it and encouraged developers to create widget. The surprise new feature in Opera v8 was userjs. However, Opera has done precious little to encourage userjs writers. Opera’s negligence towards userjs is evident from the fact that myOpera doesn’t yet have an userjs gallery. The only site dedicated to Opera’s userjs – userjs.org (created by Arve Bersvendsen – an Opera user), is now defunct. Userjs is a wonderful tool and scripts like oSpell demonstrate its power. Yet, there are very few quality userjs available for Opera (especially in comparison to the number of Greasemonkey scripts being developed by the large Firefox community).

Undoubtedly, widgets are useful (especially on Mobile platform) and I am happy to see Opera actively promising Widgets. Last time we got two fantastic widgets from the winners (Video Manager and Time and Date). If Opera Software makes similar investment into userjs, I am sure we would have more quality scripts being written.

Spool.fm – Web Based Music Player

By indyan on May 15, 2007

Spool.fmSpool.fm is a community oriented web-based music player whose goal is to make sharing music simple. I have been toying around with it since yesterday and I must say I am quite impressed. It has a fairly good collection of songs (this is subjective), including some hit Indian movie songs. The audio quality is average and there is definitely scope for improvement.

But, the low bitrate makes it possible to stream music while surfing even on my 256kbps connection. Spool.fm’s main objective is to allow friends with similar musical taste enjoy music collectively. You can drag and drop songs to create and save playlists which you can share with your friends. Not only that with the synchronization feature you can both listen to the same songs at the same time.

The most impressive aspect of Spool.fm is it’s integration of Audioscrobbler (which powers Last.fm also). While you are playing a song, it retrieves a list of related songs and albums based on data available at AudioScrobbler. If you have an last.fm account it can also fetch the list of top tracks, weekly top tracks and recent tracks played by you. It offers to play similar songs based on this data (Screenshot).
