Six Premium Antivirus Software for Free

By indyan on June 8, 2008

Note: For fresh working links of new Antivirus products check out Six Premium Antivirus Software for Free – II

Antivirus vendors are on a roll. Everyone seems to be giving away free extended trial licenses. Here are six premium antivirus softwares you can get for free.

Arrow Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 : Kaspersky’s products are one of the highest rated security products around.

It had the fourth highest detection rate (after Trustport, Avira Antivir and AVK – Trustport and AVK are not recomended because they use multiple engines and are extremely heavy on the system and slow). KAV also won the gold award in anti-malware-test.com’s polymorphic virus test and self-protection test. However KAV’s performances in av-comparative.org’s retrospective test (May 08) and av-test.org’s Match shootout were mediocre. Kaspersky Antivirus and Internet Security are also the most feature packed security softwares around. One of it’s best feature is Rollback which allows you to restore your computer to a state before an virus infection was detected. It’s also the best looking security software out in the market.

Tiny Utilities : Small is Good – V

By indyan on June 7, 2008

Before I went on hiatus I had reviewed twelve small but extremely useful freewares in a series titled “Tiny Utilities – Small is Good”. Here, I present to you the fifth installment of the series.

QT Addressbar

I am not a big fan of Vista, but I have got to admit it’s new address bar with breadcrumb navigation system definitely makes life easier. Now with QT Addressbar you can do the same in Windows XP. After installing this you need to select QT Address bar from View–>Toolbars. and you would get a clone of the Vista address bar.

Opera Gets A Facelift

By indyan on June 6, 2008

Opera Opera has got a new skin and its sharp. Today the desktop team released a new weekly build (experimental builds released to the community for feedback), which includes a brand new skin. Opera had its last visual upgrade as far back as v7.5 (which was released in December, 2003). But, even that wasn’t as drastic as this.

NetDocs- Story of a Missed Opportunity

By indyan on June 6, 2008

The WallStreet Journal has published a fabulous article on the dynamics between Bill Gates and Ballmer. It reveals how a clash between Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer laid the foundation for the current transition of power. But for me the most interesting aspect of the article was the revelation that Microsoft had come up with the idea of a web based alternative to Microsoft Word as far back as 2001. Here’s the relevant excerpt from the article:

In one case, two vice presidents clashed over the future of NetDocs, a promising effort to offer software programs such as word processing over the Internet. The issue: Because NetDocs risked cannibalizing sales of Microsoft’s cash-cow Office programs, some executives wanted NetDocs killed.

Messrs. Gates and Ballmer were unable to settle on a plan. First, NetDocs ballooned to a 400-person staff, then it got folded into the Office group in early 2001, where it died.

Piclens – A New 3D Way to Browse

By indyan on June 4, 2008

PiclensFirefox isnt my default browser (Opera still is my default browser) but every now and then I stumble across wonderful extensions that does make me want to use it more. Piclens is one such extension.

PicLens provides a full screen, 3D interface to view multimedia content (images and videos) on the web. Piclens extension for Firefox adds a small button that turns blue whenever you come across a website that is supported. When fired up Piclens gets rid of the browser window and normal webpage, extracts the multimedia content from the webpage and displays it in a truely captivating and stunning 3D interface. You feel that you are flying past a wall of of images (or rather their thumbnails) which on being double click open up the slideshow interface displaying a full screen high resolution version of the image. Recently Anand tagged me in the “8 Random facts about me” post. So here it goes :

i) I am big fan of US Television shows. Some of my favourite shows are – FRIENDS, LOST, Prison Break, House, Heroes.
ii) I am a horrendous gamer. I had trouble even completing Far Cry tutorial.
iii) I am Hindu by birth. However I believe in Agnosticism.
iv) I hate rap and hip-hop music. I like listening to pop music. Check out my last.fm profile.

vi) I hate strawberries and anything with strawberry flavour in it.
vii) I love surfing to Wikipedia and reading random articles. Wikipedia is one of my favourite boredom killers.

Post Like A Pirate

By indyan on July 13, 2007

Post Like A Pirate Post Like a Pirate is a web-service that allows you to post messages using pirate speek (duh!).The Pirate Translator translates your messages into pirate-speek as you type. You can also email your friends and post messages to twitter directly in pirate text using this service. The website itself is far from being hip and cool. It doesnt funtion properly in Firefox, Opera and Safari which is disappointing. However, Post Like a Pirate does what it is supposed to fairly well. Obviously this kind of service has no utility and is just meant for some fun between friends.

Tiny Utilities : Small is Good – IV

By indyan on July 7, 2007

Time for another edition of Tiny Utilities. I have three more nifty software in store for you.

NetStat Live

Just as the name suggests, this utility displays live statistics about your internet connection. NSL allows you to monitor your internet connection’s status on the fly. This works much better than most web based internet speed checking services. Not only does it display the download and upload speed it also displays the amount of data downloaded and uploaded. Besides that it can also show statistics like CPU usage your system and average ping time and number of hops of a remote machine.

Pownce Invites

By indyan on July 4, 2007

Pownce Pownce is Kevin Rose’s (of Digg.com fame) latest venture. Its pretty much Scrapping meets Mini-Blogging meets File Sharing. Personally, I am not a fan of Twitter and similar services. I am not interested in knowing if my friend is taking a bath or eating breakfast or is getting a massage. In spite of that I see definite potential in Pownce. There are two things that makes it stand out.
Arrow Ability to send files to a single person, to a group or to everyone in my buddy list.
Arrow Similarly you can send messages, links and event updates to a single person, to a group or to everyone.

Pownce is mainly web based however a light-weight desktop module based on Adobe’s Apollo (AIR) is also available.
I am not going to review it in detail but if you are interested you should check out Mashable and Webware‘s coverage.

Pownce is still very young and I expect a lot more from it in the future. If you want to try it, just leave a comment here requesting an invitation. Make sure that you provide your proper email address, Pownce doesn’t like temporary email providers. I have six invites left.

P.S. : Thanks to The Witness Exchange for inviting me to Pownce.

All Invites have been used up. If you are still looking for a Pownce invite, try your luck at one of these blogs.
