April 1st is here and people all around the world busy acting silly. Here are some of the best April Fools Day jokes from the World Wide Web :
10. Youtube – Upside Down
Youtube decided it would be fun to flip all the videos for a day. Although this one lost points for being slightly annoying, it made it to the list simply because of this tip to view videos in the new layout.
Move to Australia
As you probably know, everything in Australia is upside-down, so moving to Australia may provide you with a more natural YouTube viewing experience. (Note: If you live Down Under, and the page is still upside-down for you, then we recommended moving to the northern hemisphere.)
Thanksfully videos can be restored to their original alignment by removing ‘&flip=1‘ keyword from the address or by switching to the old layout.
9. ThinkGeek – Now Selling The Unicorn Chaser
ThinkGeek unleashed a brand new line of products just for this day. Unicorn Chaser, Ultimate Assassins Weapon Ice Mold, Squeez Bacon and Buzzword – The Shocking Speech-Recognition Wristband are some of the gems.
8. Wired – Twitter with a Business Plan
Wired.com decided to pull Twitter’s leg and posted a video of Twitter’s secret business plan – Gadgets!
7. Wikipedia- Tale of Revolving Houses and Diamond Showers
In probably the most elaborate April Fools Day prank Wikipedia created an entire page full of fake news. They certainly took the pain to make it all look convincing. Click here for a snapshot.
6. Smashing Magazine – Hands on with Internet Explorer 8.1
Smashing Magazine posted a detailed review of the next generation Internet Explorer. Some of the major new features in IE 8.1 are support for Firefox extensions, inbuilt Gecko and Webkit (used by Firefox and Safari respectively) rendering engines, website skins, improved standards compliance, better javascript rendering performance and server-side code decompiler!
Google is famous for its April Fools Day jokes. This year they announced the release of Cognitive Autoheuristic Distributed-Intelligence Entity or simply CADIE. CADIE certainly made a splash this April Fools day making it’s appearance across the Google Network. Thanks to its advanced artificial intelligence CADIE can scan every one of your incoming messages and automatically send the perfect reply. CADIE can also help you out with Image Searches and Travelling by coming up with a list of reccomendations.
4. Guardian ditches print
Guardian announced that it has had enough of paper and will now switch exclusively to Twitter because it believes a story can be told in 140 characters. With the rapidly declining profits of Printed Newspapers this joke is actually scarily realistic.
3. ThePirateBay teams up with Warner Brothers
This one wins for its shock value. Users of ThePirateBay proudly announced that they have been acquired by the Warner Bros Inc. and welcome users with this new logo :
One of the funniest jokes of the day was Reddig – the marriage of Reddit and Digg. Just for the day Reddit donned Digg’s colours (screenshot). This one deserves extra kudoes considering that Digg is the main competitor of Reddit.
This has to be the best joke of the year and the only one that actually had me fooled for a few seconds.
In the words of Jon von Tetzchner (CEO, Opera)
“In 2001, we introduced Mouse Gestures in Opera 5.1. At that point we knew we were on to something,” said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera. “We already had keyboard shortcuts in the very first version of Opera, but once we introduced voice control in Opera 8, we had only one input mechanism left–the face. Opera Face Gestures represent the next frontier in browser control.”
Opera Face Gestures include more than 45 controls, from opening new tabs to restoring sessions to navigating through a Web page. Opera Face Gestures are so advanced you can compose and send an entire e-mail message through Opera’s built-in e-mail client. Even Mouse Gestures can be triggered with Opera Face Gestures. To activate Opera Face Gestures simply press the single-key shortcut F8.
Did you get fooled today? What was your favourite prank? Don’t forget to leave a comment.
The Pirate Bay prank really would have been a bummer if it would have been true..
