According to HowStuffWorks, Identity Theft is the fastest growing crime in the US. Sadly, most internet users are oblivious to its dangers. In an earlier post, I had outlined some basic steps you can take to enhance your online security. However, if you want to be more proactive about protecting yourself, you will probably like the software I am going to discuss today.
Sentry Bay Personal Data Protection Suite adds an additional layer of security to protect you against brand new keyloggers and phishing attacks. It utilises a three-pronged approach to achieve this.
Anti-key logging: Keyloggers are one of the most effective ways to harvest sensitive and personal information. While utilities like Neo’s SafeKeys can technically outsmart most keyloggers, it is hardly practical to always type using a virtual keyboard. Sentry Bay gets around this problem by automatically scrambling all keystrokes. It replaces your keystrokes with fake random characters to mislead any active keylogger.
Once Personal Data Protection Suite has been successfully installed, you should see a tiny scrambler display (pictured below) in your browser’s title bar. This green display shows the scrambled characters as you enter data.
Anti-screen capture: Another technique commonly employed by malicious attackers is to take screenshots of your system at regular intervals. This technique can not only fool onscreen keyboards, but is also useful for stealing sensitive data. Sentry Bay clams that their Data Protection Suite can stop such attacks by disabling screen capture entirely. During my quick test, none of the usual screen capture programs (SnagIt, WinSnap and Windows Sniping Tool) managed to get past Sentry Bay.
Anti-Phishing: Phishing is possibly the most common trick employed by identity thieves. Fortunately, all modern browsers provide some sort of in-built protection against phishing attacks. However, Sentry Bay’s phishing filter works in a slightly different way. It has been trained on the leading brands that are potential targets of phishing attacks – including banks, e-commerce sites, auction sites, payment processors, government institutions and utilities. As a result, Data Protection Suite can easily spot irregularities and distinguish fake look-alikes from the real deal.
Theoretically, Sentry Bay should be able to stop most 0-day attacks in its tracks. It’s hard to say how effective it is in reality, but it never hurts to have an additional layer of protection.
Sentry Bay Personal Data Protection Suite is an excellent product for folks looking to protect themselves against 0-day attacks. The utility itself is lightweight and idiot proof. Unlike most other similar software, it does not require any intervention on user’s part. There are just two options to configure and everything just works out of the box. It’s definitely worth a try if you are serious about online security.
